FAMOUS BIRD
Puffins
Puffins are unmistakable birds with their black back and white underparts, distinctive black head with large pale cheeks and their tall, flattened, brightly-coloured bill. Its comical appearance is heightened by its red and black eye-markings and bright orange legs. Used as a symbol for books and other items, this clown among seabirds is one of the world's favourite birds. With half of the UK population at only a few sites, it's a Red List species.

Northern Gannets
Northern Gannets One of Britain’s largest seabirds, the Northern gannet is bright white with distinctive black wingtips and a yellow head. When flying, they alternate between flapping and gliding, swooping low over the water. They feed by circling high above the waves, before folding their wings back and diving into the water headfirst at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.Young gannets are dark brown in colour at a year old and, over 3-5 years, will gradually moult this dark plumage and switch it for white as they develop into mature adults.

Seals
Seals: Harbour seals can live for up to 20-30 years. Adult harbour seals are about 1.5 m in length and can weigh in the region of 80-100 kg. It’s hard to tell males and females apart, but males are slightly larger than females. Harbour seals have a rounded, dog-like head, with a steep forehead and eyes to the front of their face.
Harbour seals prefer to come ashore in sheltered waters and they usually feed within 40-50 km from their haul-out site.

Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement
Delve into more than 4,000 years of human settlement in the same location. Neolithic people first settled at this site in Shetland around 2700 BC, and it remained in use until the AD 1600s. Discoveries made here include oval-shaped Bronze Age houses, an Iron Age broch and wheelhouses, Norse long houses, a medieval farmstead, and a laird’s house dating from the 1500s.
Fulmar
The Fulmar: Almost gull-like, this grey and white seabird is related to the albatrosses. The Fulmar flies low over the sea on stiff wings, with shallow wingbeats, gliding and turning to show its white underparts then grey upperparts. At its breeding sites, it will fly high up the cliff face, riding the updraughts. They will feed in flocks out at sea. They defend their nests from intruders by spitting out a foul-smelling oil.

Sumburgh Head Lighthouse
Sumburgh Lighthouse was designed by Robert Stevenson, one of many generations of Stevensons to design lighthouses, and grandfather to author Robert Louis. The lighthouse was constructed in 1821 by Peterhead building contractor John Reid. This was the first lighthouse in Shetland and Stevenson’s eighth in total – including the famous Bell Rock Lighthouse.
